Stephanie L. Brown is assistant professor of general medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and a Research Investigator at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. Stephanie received her Ph. D. in Social Psychology from Arizona State University in 1999. After completing her degree, she accepted a N.I.M.H. Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Social, Environment, and Health program at the Institute for Social Research. Her research interests include the application of evolutionary theory to close relationships and altruism, as well as the health benefits of altruistic forms of behavior. Stephanie was recently awarded a 3-year Research Scientist Development Award from N.I.M.H. to study the benefits of giving for reducing depression among dialysis patients. Currently, Dr. Brown is examining emotional and cognitive mechanisms that may regulate whether giving produces health benefits for the giver, such as accelerated recovery from cardiovascular stress.
