This group of scholars, representing four educational institutions in northeastern Nigeria, brings together academics with expertise in Islamic studies, education, science, and chaplaincy to this advanced regional outreach and engagement project. Focused on promoting science and religion dialogue on a broad and participatory level, core members come together to present seminars and workshops within educational, medical and religious institutions in the region. Presentations provide an opportunity to promote ASIRS, enrich and refine programming, and identify and attract new members. Monthly society meetings focus on readings and discussion of specific topics such as religion and health, the environment, and information technology. Quarterly talks – well publicized and open to the public –invite members of institutions at which the society has made presentations to come together with other members of the community. ASIRS also sponsors a newsletter and publication of conference proceedings and contributed works of members. Members also have access to office and library facilities at the University of Maiduguri. Another major initiative of ASIRS is the promotion and establishment of science and religion clubs in post-primary and secondary schools throughout the region. The society also hosts an annual conference which commissions papers from scholarly leadership and competitive presentations by students themselves.
