Rationale and Call for Web sites
In celebration of scientific achievement, past, present, and future, the
John Templeton Foundation, in collaboration
with Metanexus Institute, offered a global Web site competition with cash prizes: the
Amazing Light Laser Challenge.
The year 2005 is the 90th birthday year of
Charles Townes, who received the Nobel Prize in 1964 for his contribution
to the invention of the laser, which has profoundly transformed science, technology,
and society. This year also marks the centenary of Albert Einstein's "miracle
year" when he "discovered" the quantum of light along with his famous theory
of relativity and has been designated by the United Nations as the World Year
of Physics.
In this spirit, we solicited submissions of multimedia Web sites
that exhibited excellence in creativity and innovation in the context of laser
technology. Applicants focused on the laser itself, or used
the theme of the laser as an exemplar of creative discoveries and their impact
on society. The theme was meant to be a creative catalyst with some relevance
to laser technology and not restrictive or limiting in theme or format. The winning
Web site in this competition will be announced at the Amazing Light symposium.
