Science and Faith in the New Millennium
Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation
Waterloo, Ontario
The Canadian Scientific & Christian Affiliation (CSCA) is a national fellowship of scientists, teachers and members of the public whose goal is that of exploration and education concerning the science/faith relationship, upholding the integrity of both Christian faith as a relevant means of expressing God's love and the scientific method as a means of providing reliable knowledge concerning God's creation. Our membership extends from coast to coast in Canada. The project’s core activity has been hosting a nation-wide lecture series entitled "Science & Faith in the 21st Century". Previous speakers in this series have included Nobel Laureate Bill Phillips, Environmentalist Loren Wilkinson, Theologian Anne Foerst, Intelligent Design Theorist Bill Dembski, Denis Lamoureux (Canada's only professor of Science & Theology), Psychologist Malcolm Jeeves, Neuroscientist David Cechetto and Templeton Prize winners John Polkinghorne and George Ellis. Public presentations provide an informed, balanced and exploratory view of the role current issues in theology and the sciences play in our personal spiritual lives, as well as in society. Each lecture is followed by questions and answers and an informal discussion. In July 2004, CSCA hosted a conference at Trinity Western University entitled "Neuroscience & the Image of God". The latest findings in neuroscience were discussed with particular attention given to their theological implications for Christian theology. Speakers included Warren Brown, David Cechetto, George Ellis, Malcolm Jeeves and Heather Looy Matching funds are provided through donations, bequest matching, sponsorship of hosting institutions for the lecture series, and a Reid Trust grant. From the Science and Faith in the New Millennium lecture series, several CSCA local sections have emerged and been awarded Local Societies Initiative grants (see the LSI directory for Canada for more information).
