Where Are We Going? Zygon and the Future of Religion-and-Science: A Symposium Marking the Retirement of Philip Hefner as Editor of Zygon

Friday, May 8, 2009, 7:00 PM – 9:15 PM with reception following
Saturday, May 9, 2009, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM with banquet following

LSTC Augustana Chapel
Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago
1100 East 55th Street (at South University Avenue)
Chicago, IL 60615

Highlights:
Where are we going in the contemporary dialogue on religion and science?  How shall we—scientists and theologians, scholars of religion and leaders of religious communities—guide a larger culture so often confused and conflicted over competing claims about the relationship between science and religion?  How shall we—students, teachers, concerned laypersons, and dedicated professionals of all kinds—navigate this contested terrain as we encounter it in our own lives?

Since its founding in 1966, Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science has pioneered paths toward more constructive and comprehensive interdisciplinary understandings.  At a pivotal point in its journey of scholarship, the journal will gather a distinguished group of contributors—representing diverse disciplines including theology, philosophy, religious studies, biology, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and history—to chart new directions for future exploration.

The symposium honors Dr. Philip Hefner (Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology, Lutheran School of Theology) on the occasion of his retirement as editor of Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science and welcomes Dr. Willem B. Drees (Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, Leiden University) as incoming editor.  The symposium will be chaired by Dr. Karl Peters (Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion, Rollins College), who serves as co-editor of Zygon.
