After receiving a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Bruce F. Katz became a lecturer in Department of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at the University of Sussex. While at Sussex he shifted his emphasis from machine intelligence to machine appreciation. Specifically, he studied neurally-based models of aesthetic perception, including the neural correlates of humor, music, and visual art. He is currently at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University, where he conducts neuroimaging studies on musical enjoyment and other affective phenomena. He also has proposed a new theory of consciousness based on causal currents, or the degree to which neural modules mutually influence one another. He is the author of a book on digital design, and a forthcoming book on technologies to enhance cognition and affect called モThe Mind Unboundヤ.
