Religion and Scientific Promoters Among the Youth in Uganda (RSPYU)
Scripture Union of Uganda
Kampala, Busia and Bigiri Districts

This initiative calls upon the expertise of core contributing members from the departments of religious studies and social science of Makerere University, the Institute of Public Health and the local medical school, Islamic University in Uganda, Mbara University of Science and Technology, and Mukono Christian University to provide facilitated discussion and presentation to twenty colleges, academies, and high schools in the Busia and Bigiri districts of Uganda. The primary focus of the effort is concentrated on exploring the principles of belief in spirituality and healing that are relevant to the African/Ugandan culture and to promoting interest amongst high school and college students in the pursuit of a deeper understanding of religion and science. Presentations and discussions, facilitated by members, will explore topics in spiritual and traditional-herbalist and scientific models of healing in an Africa context; contributions of religion and science to Ugandan society; and concepts and perspectives in African traditional medicine and modern scientific medical models. Activities include a combination of conferences, symposia, competitions, and camps for selected students and teachers. A major part of this effort includes networking with other emerging science-faith efforts in Uganda to exchange facilitators, speakers, and students. The publication of booklets and pamphlets for use in high schools, teacher training colleges, seminaries, and other institutions assist in outreach to locate other contributors.
