United Religious Initiative
Kampala

The United Religious Initiative in Uganda is comprised of a group of individuals representing a diversity of religious, academic, and spiritual backgrounds to “promote interfaith dialogue and a culture of peace and respect.” The Department promotes this same approach to the science-faith discussion through the establishment of Religion and Science Clubs in Ugandan High Schools, Seminaries, Colleges, Universities, and congregations. Through club activities, the group hopes to promote the consideration of religion and science in the context of African culture; development of an African hermeneutic methodology that will critically address science and faith issues; empowerment of students and clergy in their knowledge and consideration of relevant issues; and promote interdisciplinary exploration and the forging of a new challenge in contemporary education. These clubs encourage members to publish findings and proceedings in the African Journal of Religion and Science of Makerere University. Workshops and seminars are also organized to bring together members and leaders of the various clubs to explore current topics and theories in science and religion in relation to African culture and theology. Members, collectively, are also involved in producing pamphlets and discussion materials for use during meetings.
