Interested and qualified scholars from a variety of academic disciplines are invited to submit a letter of intent between May 15 and August 1, 2005. Submission will be accepted no later than midnight on August 1, 2005. The letter should clearly state to which topical area you are applying and describe the research project you propose to conduct. It should be not more than three pages in length, single-spaced, with no smaller than a 10-point font. A curriculum vitae summary of not more than three pages for the principal investigator should also be attached. This should include references to previous articles and books written by the investigator.
Attention should be paid to the significance and the methodological design of the project. We especially welcome applications that plan to incorporate collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.
The Letter of Intent stage is a competition and only the highest rated letters of intent, selected by a panel of judges, will be invited to submit full proposals. We expect to invite approximately 8-10 letters of intent for Area 1, 8-10 letters of intent for Area 2, and 16-20 letters of intent for Area 3 to continue to the submission of the full proposal. We plan to preserve a 4:1 ratio of full proposals received to grant awards available in each area.
