This society consists of some of the leading thinkers in its nation. Its members are moved in their work in the science and religion dialogue by a cultural imperative to provide a hedge against fundamentalisms of various sorts and to make a positive contribution to mitigating the clash of cultures that accompany mass immigration and movement of peoples. The society is embarked on an initial three year research initiative exploring the process of religious knowledge as it pertains to religious pluralism, the focus of their weekly seminars. They plan to develop a unique series of programs aimed at public and private school teachers to promote a well-balanced science and religion dialogue. Their working methodology is based on the principles of “autonomy” (avoiding dogmatism), “critical distance” (avoiding ethno- or religio-centrism), and “pluralistic analyses” (adopting scientific, philosophical, sociological, and theological perspectives). Very “metanexus.” Twenty workshops are held each year, and government-certified continuing education credits are available to participants. This is a prestigious society, drawing its inspiration from one of Spain’s greatest philosophers, whose numerous theologically and scientifically informed works include Man and God, The Philosophical Problem of the History of Religions, and The Dynamic Structure of Reality. Even though this society is hosted by an independent foundation, its course offerings are accepted in doctoral programs at three of the nation’s elite universities. They have leveraged funds from commercial firms, government ministries, and publishing houses. I believe this will be a high-profile engagement with their nation’s culture and educational institutions.
