Membership in this winning society consists of some of the leading scholars at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Academic fields represented by the membership include physics, chemistry, psychology, zoology, nanomaterials, systematic theology, practical ethics, philosophy, sociology, biochemistry, psychiatry, and international relations. They have launched a multi-tiered program under the umbrella theme of “Nature, Intentionality, and Finality,” that brings together the core group for bi-annual organizational and study meetings, fortnightly seminars, and periodic international conferences, as well participation in the pan-European SophiaEuropa project. Their series of seminars and conferences on God and Nature used the tragedy of the tsunami as a touchstone for their explorations. Their next series deals with the issue of embryonic and stem-cell research and their meaning for the human person. The society has collaborated with other intra-departmental groups associated with the university, including the Forum on Science and Religion hosted by the department of physics, and the Michael Argyle Forum for Psychology and Religion. The society aims to generate a “snowball effect” in promoting transdisciplinary dialogue and inter-institutional approaches to research in issues of science and religion.
