Abstract

Le CENTRE D'ÉTUDE DES RELIGIONS DE L'UNIVERSITÉ DE MONTRÉAL (CÉRUM) élabore des questions particulières sur cet horizon de compréhension. En premier lieu, le dialogue au plan de la cosmogenèse se fera sous l'éclairage de la notion de matière : d'une part par le biais des questions de l'origine et de l'évolution des corps telles quelles sont conçues par la science (de façon empirique et formelle ou logicomathématique) et, d'autre part, par les religions, dans la mythologie et l'expérience religieuse et mystique. En second lieu, le dialogue au plan de la biogenèse se fera sous l'éclairage de la notion de biosphère, de vie ou encore de Terre : comment, d'une part, la biologie conçoit-elle l'apparition et l'évolution du vivant, et, d'autre part, comment ces dernières sont-elles appréhendées dans le cadre religieux (à travers des notions comme le microcosme et le macrocosme, le ciel et la terre, ou encore celles relatives aux trois règnes minéral, végétal et animal). En troisième lieu, le dialogue au plan de l'ontogenèse s'effectuera à la lumière de la notion de soi, de conscience ou d'esprit. Encore ici, il s'agira de comprendre, d'une part, comment les sciences neurologiques, cognitives et psychologiques perçoivent empiriquement et expliquent rationnellement ce qu'est l'activité consciente, et, plus précisément, l'expérience de la transcendance et, d'autre part, comment la théologie et la philosophie tentent d'éclairer la signification de l'expérience religieuse en général et de l'expérience mystique en particulier.

The Centre for the the Study of Religions of the University of Montreal (CERUM) elaborates on the particular questions on the horizon of comprehension. In the first place, the dialogue on the plan of cosmogeny will be made under the illumination of the concept of matter: on one hand, by the means of questions on the origin and evolution of [celestial] bodies just as they are conceived by science (in an empirical and formal, or logico-mathematical fashion) and, on the other hand, by the religions, in mythology, and religious/mystical experience. In the second place, the dialogue on the plan of bio-genesis will be made under the illumination of the concept of biosphere, of life still on Earth: how, one one hand, as biology conceives the appearance and evolution of life, and, on the other hand, how these concepts are apprehended within the religious framework (through notions like the microcosm and the macrocosm, heaven and Earth, or those still relative to the three kingdoms: mineral, plant, and animal). In the third place, the dialogue on the plan of ontogeny will be carried out in the light of the concept of the self, the conscience or the spirit. Here, still, this will serve in the understanding, on one hand, of how the neurological, cognitive and psychological sciences empirically perceive and rationally explain what is conscious activity, and, more precisely, the experience of transcendence, and on the other hand, how theology and philosophy try to illuminate the significance of religious experience in general and mystical experience in particular.

« Le Soi dans tous ses états » constitue un état des lieux scientifique, culturel et religieux sur la question du "Soi". Autant les chercheurs universitaires des domaines scientifiques, philosophiques ou des sciences religieuses que les cliniciens, infirmières et autres professionnels des soins de santé sont invités à explorer les multiples avenues qui permettent d'approcher le phénomène de la conscience du Soi. Ce colloque représente une occasion de dialogue et d'échange multidisciplinaire et s'adresse à un vaste public.

"The Self Inside Out" undertakes to examine the current state of scientific, cultural, and religious thought concerning the self. University researchers in the fields of science, philosophy or the religious sciences as well as clinicians, nurses, and other health-care professionals are invited to explore the numerous avenues of approach to consciousness of the Self. It is hoped that this symposium will be an opportunity for multidisciplinary dialogue and exchange; it is addressed to the public at large.
